The skyscrapers of Denver stand child-like at the feet of the ancient and authoritative Rocky Mountains. This city has only begun ascension to the rank of an industrialized city. It still feels like a small town. You can walk across the entirety of the downtown in probably two hours. It’s quaint. I have done the stroll twisted on gin and enthusiasm once or twice or more. Nestled among the expanding towers Denver’s youth and relatively small downtown is classic brewery called Jagged Mountain Brewery with a modern tavern feel and a plethora of beer.

After a long week of staring at spreadsheets and thinking about the life, I have come to live, a friend and I walked to Jagged Mountain Brewery off Lawrence and 18th. The brewery stands tall among skyscrapers as one of the only watering holes in the “traditional” downtown area of Denver. And we weren’t the only ones in search for a drink on that Friday evening.

The barroom was packed with the young and old alike and the layout was comfortable and inviting. The bartenders were quick in spite of a maddening crowd. I grabbed a flight of beers to get my beer-snob-on consisting of Cougar Slayer – Blackberry Saison, Mauna Kea – IPA Mango Pineapple, Wolf Pack – Black Saison and Transplant – Session IPA. I will let you guess what is what by the picture. Try all four either way. But out of all four, I most enjoyed the Transplant. It was easy drinking and light on the soul.

It’s always nice to have that place one wash away the days and hours of corporate life.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time at the Jagged Mountain Brewery. My friend was called away to tend to his offspring. That’s life in your 30’s. Babies rule the goddamn universe! You wouldn’t think that such helpless little humans can dominate this life, but they do. And, honestly, I like it. Children have the same effect on adults that the Rocky Mountains do on the giant buildings in Denver. Humility. I enjoy seeing humans caring for others. If only we could care for those mountains like my friend does his kiddo.

I enjoyed my time at Jagged Mountain Brewery as I sat in the belly of the beast, among the monuments of man. And, although, downtown Denver’s skyscrapers pale in comparison to the mountains there is plenty to enjoy for all those who choose to see. So, while you tool around the city, insignificant to the concrete and steel around you, stop in at Jagged Mountain and have a beverage to let it all sink in.
