I stopped making New Year’s resolutions when they started to feel like they were becoming a dogma that I would always fail. I wasn’t following through on the promises – I only did my task for a short time and gave up a month or two into the year. In part, I think my lack of follow-through happened because I wasn’t making these resolutions for myself. I was doing them for other people. It’s what the world expected of me. And no one should ever do something for someone else. Recently, I stopped in at a brewery, where just over a year ago, a group of persistent and passionate beer-makers with a stronger constitution than me, made their dream come true and started a brewery by the name of Resolute Brewing.
The taproom was packed with happy hour patrons. This seems to be pretty much par for the course these days in Colorado’s booming economy. One balloon that floated above a table congratulated a person on their retirement. Another table was set up for what looked like a going away party. In every moment, people are moving on and expanding this life into something of a more grand scale or less invasive nature or both.
While I waited to talk to someone that worked at Resolute Brewing, I grabbed a beer that I would later find out that Resolute’s top seller 2 to 1 is their Hefeweizen. I can say it was legitimately one of the best Hefs I’ve had the pleasure of drinking – a sweet banana godsend – a solid example of what it is like to hit a home run in a figurative way.
After the initial rush tapered off, I had a chance to talk to two of the founders: Matt D and Zac. We talked why they chose the name Resolute Brewing. It’s what they want to be in the community and in life. They want to be steadfast in supporting their neighborhood and somewhere people can congregate. They have free Wi-Fi and a “third-space” design and business plan in mind. It is perfect for business folks and locals alike.
The head brewer, Zac, wants to create a climate where the IPA isn’t the crutch of the brewery. He wants to see the community around him enjoy a variety of beers. A big part of their business is based on the local business travelers and they don’t need to be bogged down with a lack of choice. However, I should say, I had one of their IPAs and it was fucking awesome. Resolute Brewing sets off to break the mold and take us all with them.
I will leave you with some philosophical thoughts that hit me after listening to Matt and Zac as I plopped myself down at the bar, taking in the lovely space they have built for their passions and the for people that chose to join. I recommend you find your way down to Resolute Brewing soon.
The world will always expect you to be something. It’s natural. We are social creatures that evolved to survive in groups, in roles, with safety in numbers. But what makes us different is that we can defy that very notion. We have the ability to push back against parts of our nature. Or we create unique and inviting spaces for our communities to thrive in. It’s beautiful and it’s the best goddamn thing about us. We define our own life. We remain resolute.
