I think it’s fair to say that life becomes strange when we least expect it, even though, with enough time, we should know this shit is going to get weird. It’s inevitable, like religion or death. And I know that there is not a chance in hell to have a normal ride – whatever that means. So, why pretend to be normal? Why be anything but authentic? Or at least that’s the vibe I got at Strange Craft Beer Company.
The two co-owners, Jules and Daryl, were the only people at the bar when a buddy and I walked in after a brisk cruiser ride through the West Colfax neighborhood. The music was on point with something like Cake playing on the stereo and the small space was comfortable against my skin as sat down at the bar. The hop shaped lights lit up the warm wood walls.
We quickly asked about their flight selection and we were informed that they have a set flight of TEN beers. Ding, Ding, Ding! And the winner is Strange Craft Beer Company! And with that, we were well on our way…
I don’t know how to quantify how good the beers I had were, except that I would throw at least seven in a growler this instant: Breakfast Grapefruit Session IPA, Cherry Kriek, Pumpkin Porter, Gingerbread Man, Sweet Potato Green Chilli Beer, 1000 Barrels Imperial IPA (Fresh Hopped) and if I am feeling extra strange the Strangely Epic is right up that beautifully bizarre alley with notes of chocolate, cherries and a whole lot of wonderfully dynamic weirdness.
It takes a long time to drink a ten-deep-flight of good beer, especially when you are trying to take your savor the fucking things and breathe in the experience of the place. This gave us ample time to bullshit with the Jules and Daryl about college football, concerts and a mishmash of other topics that made us forget this was the first time we went to Strange Craft Beer Company. They are good people and they make fine beer and Jules has some serious sass that I fucking adore at a local watering hole.
After the giant flight, we both order a full glass of the Sweet Potato Green Chili Beer. As a rule, I never order chili beers because they are notorious for being overwhelming and giving heartburn like a sonofabitch, but this one was different. The chili was intertwined with the sweet at the perfect amount and I would gladly have three or four in one sitting.
At the conclusion of our, visit Michigan lost to Ohio State in double overtime. Later that day Penn State won and many hopeful students sand alumni’s dreams were crushed. And that’s OK. Strange things happen. Sometimes these strange things are hard on the soul and then other times you win on a deep level. My visit at to Strange Craft Beer Company left my jaw dropped and happy. I even signed up for their mug club. This is the first 5 out of 5 stars that I have given here at The Denver Hopper. So, drop whatever you are doing, grab an Uber or Lyft, go to Strange Craft Brewing and drink a TEN beer flight. Enjoy yourself and let things get at least a little weird. Stay true. Stay Strange.
